An excellent dark (and I do mean dark) fantasy! Nightglass is a shocking, brutal look into the dark nation of Nidal in the Paizo Pathfinder world of Golarion. The harsh indoctrination of children into the fold of this society is a teeth-gritting read, but so well done that it is hard to put down. The primary character goes through more than one metamorphosis throughout the novel. Trapped by his birth into this society, and trapped again by his talent for magic, forced to submit, to commit atrocities that darken his soul and twist his mind, he searches for escape.
Without giving anything away, I’ll say that if you are put off by graphic violence, blood and scenes of torture, you may find this book hard to deal with. It is dark… But Liane Merciel does a wonderful job depicting a very twisted society, a job I would not have wanted to tackle myself. In the end, I believe she succeeds admirably.
Another great Pathfinder Tale from Paizo!
